“Oh, I’m Begging You, No”: 18 Songs Against Suicide

December 31, 2014

Some songs portray suicide as a compelling option, even an outright solution. It is doubtful that listening to such songs can cause suicidal thoughts, but it might intensify them.

Consider that old adage: What you focus on, expands. Focus on songs that portray suicide positively, and positive thoughts about suicide can expand.

So, here are 18 songs that implore people to resist suicide. Some might call them anti-suicide songs.

Some of the songs offer comfort or hope. Others simply discourage suicide. None portrays suicide as romantic, harmless, or otherwise desirable.

Warning: These are not necessarily happy, uplifting songs. Some are quite sad. But their message ultimately is to stay alive.

A Better Place, A Better Time

By Streetlight Manifesto (Alternative rock)

So you’re tired of living
Feel like you might give in
Well don’t
It’s not your time…

*

Beyond the Gray Sky

By 311 (Alternative rock)

Don’t give up the fight to stay alive and even if you have to
Find the reason of another’s pain if they lose you
If not for yourself then those around who care like I do
One day you’ll see the clear blue
Beyond the gray sky…

*

Come Out Fighting

By Pennywise (Alternative rock)

Well I know there are times when you’re feeling close to the ground
and there’s times when you may feel there’s no place to call home
and there’s times when the only end in sight is the end you got to
Come out fighting…

*

Crazy Baby

By Joan Osbourne (Rock)

Oh, my crazy baby
Try to hold on tight
Oh, my crazy baby
Don’t put out the light…

(This song is pretty dark. If not for the stanza above, it would be a far cry from an anti-suicide song.)

*

Don’t Try Suicide

Queen (Rock)

You need help
Look at yourself you need help
You need life
So don’t hang yourself
It’s OK OK OK OK…

(Be warned that this song contains offensive language, and it makes insensitive statements, like “Nobody cares” and “Nobody gives a damn” if you try suicide. Ultimately, the song redeems itself, and I know quite a few people who have felt strengthened by it during vulnerable times.)

*

Everybody Hurts

By R.E.M. (Alternative rock)

Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don’t throw your hand, oh no…

*

Hold On

By Good Charlotte (Alternative rock)

Hold on, if you feel like letting go
Hold on, it gets better than you know…

*

Jumper

By Third Eye Blind (Alternative)

Everyone’s got to face down the demons
Maybe today we can put the past away
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you’ve been living in…

*

Life Left to Go

By SafetySuit (Rock)

Oh, I’m begging you, no
There’s more life left to go
Oh, I’m begging you, please
Cause I, I don’t want you to leave me…

*

Lullaby

By Nickelback (Rock)

Stop thinking about
The easy way out
There’s no need to go and blow the candle out
Because you’re not done…

(I considered leaving this song out, because I think it is simplistic and misguided to call suicide “the easy way out.” Yet the song is otherwise too powerful to omit from this list simply because of those few words.)

*

Never Too Late

By Three Days Grace (Rock)

Still I hear you say you want to end your life
Now and again we try to just stay alive
Maybe we’ll turn it around ’cause it’s not too late
It’s never too late…

*

Out of Control

By Oingo Boingo (New wave/pop)

Don’t throw it away
You’ve got too many things to say
If you throw away your life…
The world will never be the same…

*

Self Conclusion

By Spill Canvas (Alternative)

Yeah we all flirt with the tiniest notion
Of self conclusion in one simplified motion
You see the trick is that you’re never supposed act on it
No matter how unbearable this misery gets…

*

Staying Alive

By Cursive (Alternative)

I’ve decided tonight
I’m staying alive
Just kicking and screaming
I’m, I’m staying alive…

*

Suicide

By the Raveonettes (Rock)

Lick your lips and f*** suicide
Suicide
Not tonight
Suicide
Not tonight…

*

Waste

By Staind (Metal)

I’ve had doubts,
I have failed,
I’ve f***** up,
I’ve had plans,
Doesn’t mean I should take my life with my own hands…

*

Why

By Rascal Flatts (Country)

Who told you life, wasn’t worth the fight
They were wrong, they lied
Now you’re gone, and we cried
‘Cause it’s not like you to walk away in the middle of a song
Your beautiful song…

*

You’re Not Alone

By Saosin (Indie rock)

You’re not alone
There is more to this, I know
You can make it out
You will live to tell…

  1. “The Pass” by Rush
-Someone set a bad example, made surrender seem alright. The act of a noble warrior, who lost the will to fight.

    • I honestly might not be here if it wasn’t for this song.

“All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
Turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razor’s edge
      Don’t turn your back
And slam the door on me”

  2. Only human by billy Joel is another good anti suicide song.

  3. Cassie by Chase Atlantic – i think of this song as being about drug abuse but it could also be about suicide (overdose) and it’s really good

    • Actually this song is really good and I’ve been obsessed with it for quite some time

  4. The problem with most of these, from a yogic perspective, is they drive the energy down.

Even though the lyrics of the song may be reaching for hope, the energy of the music is quite dreary and emphasizes the opposite effect.

I wish I could send you to scientific studies or something but in my personal experience these sorts of songs only indulge the feeling, not aid in resisting it.

  5. The Great Escape

    Pink

I can understand how the edges are rough
And they cut you like the tiny slivers of glass
    And you feel too much
And you don’t know how long you’re gonna last,
But everyone you know, is tryna smooth it over,
Find a way to make the hurt go away,
But everyone you know, is tryna smooth it over,
Like you’re trying to scream underwater,

But, I won’t let you make the great escape,
I’m never gonna watch you checkin’ out of this place
    I’m not gonna lose you
‘Cause the passion and the pain
Are gonna keep you alive someday
    Gonna keep you alive someday

I feel like I could wave my fist in front of your face
And you wouldn’t flinch or even feel a thing
And you retreated to your silent corner
Like you decided the fight was over for ya,
Everyone you know, is tryna smooth it over,
Find a way to make the hurt go away,
Everyone you know, is tryna smooth it over,
Everyone needs a floor they can fall through

I won’t let you make the great escape,
I’m never gonna watch you checkin’ out of this place
    I’m not gonna lose you
‘Cause the passion and the pain
Are gonna keep you alive someday
They’re gonna keep you alive someday

Oh, terrified of the dark, but not if you go with me
And I don’t need a pill to make me know
And I wrote the book already,
But that chapter of my life will soon be done

I’m the king of the great escape
You’re not gonna watch me checkin’ out of this place
    You’re not gonna lose me
    ‘Cause the passion and pain
Are gonna keep us alive, someday
Yeah the passion and the pain
Are gonna keep us alive someday,
    Someday, yeah

  6. “The World I Know” by Collective Soul.. the song (with it’s very powerful video) gave strength to many people in facing through their dark times. Check it out on youtube, read the comments.

  7. Guns for Hands, Migraine, and Truce by twenty one pilots. There’s this sad rage they invoke in Guns for Hands and Migraine that has always felt fitting as a person who has experienced suicidal thoughts. Truce used to be comforting although in some ways I now question the lyrics’ ties to the external when I’ve learned there’s internal journeys which must be traveled. It’s still comforting.

  8. Pretty much anything by Matisyahu works for me, but especially Live Like a Warrior.

3 little birds by Bob Marley

  9. Guns for hands ~ twenty one pilots
    Truce ~ twenty one pilots
Pretty much every twenty one pilots song WHAT with the whole ‘stay alive’ motto and stuff |-/

  10. “End of the Movie” by Cake. The thing I love about this song is how gently it gets its point across. It doesn’t scream “Don’t do it!! Life is good!!” at you the way a lot of other antisuicide songs do. It acknowledges that you will go through pain and suffering, but you still haven’t reached the end of your movie and you should stick around and see what happens next rather than leave early.

    People you love
Will turn their backs on you
    You’ll lose your hair
    Your teeth
Your knife will fall out of its sheath
But you still don’t like to leave before the end of the movie
People you hate will get their hooks into you
    They’ll pull you down
    You’ll frown
They’ll tar you and drag you through town
But you still don’t like to leave before the end of the movie
No you still don’t like to leave before the end of the show
People you hate will get their hooks into you
    They’ll pull you down
    You’ll frown
They’ll tar you and drag you through town
But you still don’t like to leave before the end of the movie
No you still don’t like to leave before the end of the show

  11. “Remember we die” by Gemini Syndrome is basically an entire song dedicated to living.
    “Remember we die
    But you’re still alive
Theres plenty of time to see the other side”

  12. “Friend, please” and “Truce” are both very powerful songs (at least they are for me) by Twenty One pilots, I cry every time I listen to them

  13. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet or not but Red Flags by Soldier Hard. It speaks of suicides by service members and veterans and the warning signs that everyone should look out for to prevent them.

    • Bulls in the Bronx saved my life. I remember going to see them in concert and they finished with Bulls in the Bronx and the crowd is jumping around and surges towards the stage and everyone was screaming, at the same time “Please, don’t take this out on me, cause you’re the only thing that’s keeping me alive” and I’m crying and singing along.

  14. Bobby Gaylor – Suicide

This is a song with one of the longest lyrics ever. At first, it looks like it favours suicide. But at some point the feeling turns around, and it starts mentioning the things that you’ll miss when you take the ‘exit of life’.
And the song ends ends with: “Hey, you were born – Finish what was started”. Brilliant!
    Read until the end:

    Animals don’t have a choice.
If they’re not happy with their place in the world… too bad.
They have to live the life they’ve been given.

Humans, on the other hand, don’t have to. We have a choice.
If you don’t like your place in the world you can get off anytime you want.
    Suicide. That’s right.
You don’t like the way your life’s going, you don’t like the way you are in the world, anything around you, you can check out anytime you like.
Animals aren’t allowed that thought and believe me, if they were, they would use it.
There’d be a lot of dogs and cats, owned by assholes that live in high-rises, diving out the windows.
Zebras… if they even had remotely that thought would take a look at themselves and go, “What the F*#K! Black & white in a green & brown world… this blows. I’m just gonna jump in the river…. I don’t have a thumb to work a gun or hold a knife or even open a jar of pills. I’m just gonna dive into the next lion’s mouth. Why even bother?”
Now, monkeys have the opposable thumb so they could kinda do it the exact same way we do.
Now, there’s a bunch of people that say, “Oh, it’s against the law”. Well, it’s only against the law if you do a crappy job and get caught.
Other people say, “Oh, we should save them”. Yeah, well you know what? Not everybody wants to be saved. Not everybody should be saved. And who are we to force our will upon them? I mean, isn’t that one of the joys about being a human? Freedom of choice?
    Now, it’s not all bad.
Now, I’m not saying “Kill yourself”.
But if you’re gonna be an idiot and do it anyway, it’s no sweat off of my back.
There’s a lot of good that could come from it. A little bit of bad thrown in.
    Some of the things:
    A job will open…
    An apartment will become available…
There’ll be more air for me…
They say there’s two girls for every guy – if you’re a man, there’ll be four chicks for me…
There’ll be more Ketel One vodka for me…
There’ll be one less idiot in line at the bank who gets up to the window without their F*#King slips filled out…
I won’t ever have to go to the store to buy my favorite Salt & Vinegar Chips and have the clerk point at you and say, “They bought the last bag”….
You won’t help change the McDonald’s sign to a Hundred Billion Served…
    You’ll never get AIDS…
You won’t have to worry about calories ever…
No more, “Hey, does this make me look fat?”…
There’ll be one less polluting human…
    You won’t have to recycle…
There’ll be one less car on the road…
There’ll be more Ring Dings for me…
Fifty or so chickens’ lives will be spared…
Your fingers won’t ever get red from eating pistachios…
You won’t be forced to visit your Grandparents on Sundays anymore…
    No more church…
You’ll be saying, “Hey, World – Kiss My Ass!”…
No more wet dreams about Supermodels…
No more Barry Manilow… For a few years anyway…
Wondering “Am I a loser?” will be a thing of the past…
Say good-bye to crappy Xmas presents from Aunts and Uncles…
You won’t have to suffer through a Motley Crue reunion…
    F*#K flossing and brushing…
You’ll never lose sleep over a pregnancy scare…
    Adios, Acne…
Worrying whether you fit in or not won’t be on your brain…
    See ya later, homework…
You’ll never have to sit through another movie brought to you by the creators of South Park…
    Schools out forever….
    No more paying bills…
You won’t have to do chores…
You won’t be able to run over toads with the lawnmower though…
    You’ll also miss McDonald’s French Fries…
    Bugs Bunny…
The amazing electrifying feeling that surges through your body when you kiss someone for the first time…
You won’t be able to watch the letterbox director’s cut of Jaws…
    Candy…
    Living above ground…
    Pudding crust…
You’ll miss the rush of getting your first apartment…
Getting to the point in your life where you can tell your parents to “F*#K Off! I gotta make my own mistakes….you did”…
You’ll miss sex – you’ll miss thinking about it, looking for it, sex by yourself, sex with a partner, sex with multiple partners…
No more summer nights that seem to go on forever…
    Roller coasters….
Naming your kid the name you always wanted…
Making a difference in the world…
You’ll miss the experience and pleasure of Hallucinogenics…
Watching your neighbor’s wife change clothes with her blinds open…
    A lifetime of masturbating…
Watching your favorite team sweep the series…
Music… You will definitely miss music…
Trying to sneak into your house drunk – three hours past your curfew…
You’ll miss the blaze and glory of the 4th of July fireworks…
    The taste of Captain Crunch…
If you’re a boy, you’ll miss the feeling the first time you reach up a girl’s shirt…
If you’re a girl, the feeling the first time you reach down a boy’s pants…
    You’ll miss your favorite coat…
Waffles with whipped cream and strawberries…
Beating your friends at video games…
You won’t be around to see what shape and color the new marshmallow in Lucky Charms will be…
You’ll miss the feeling you get when reminiscing about your first love – thirty years after the fact…
The joy of giving and receiving at Christmas…
    Skinny dipping…
Getting stoned, reading Green Eggs & Ham, and eating like a horse that got loose in the grain bin…
    Flying cars…
Hey, you were born – Finish what was started.

    • Excellent! Don’t mean to be a downer and I definitely have a sense of humor and LOVED THIS (I copied it hope you don’t mind) but the church part is the only thing well that and copious amounts of prescription drugs keep me going! Thanks for the laugh!

  15. famous last words – my chemical romance
As weird as it might sound. I mean it.
Listen to the lyrics, especially the chorus, it will push you to go the distance.

    • Yeah I mean I’ve got a wristband with the chorus on it that I look at if I’m not feeling great.

  16. how to save a life – the fray
it helped me through a large part of my life.
Even now, when I feel like I want to end it, I listen to this and I feel I need to go on.

  17. Five Finger Death Punch- Coming Down
    Disturbed- Inside The Fire
    Evanescence- My Immortal
    Crossfade- No Giving Up
    Hurt- Wonderful Life

  18. Really anything from twenty one pilots is great especially the earlier albums No Phun intended, self titled, regional at best, and vessel. I think the best for suicidal people are friend please, truce, guns for hands, and trees. Also streetlight manifesto album Everything goes numb. I also like listening to slightly Stoopid or sublime because it’s all super down to earth and a lot of it is about living with what you’ve got and some songs are just have really good stuff. Also Green Day Dookie it’s not necessarily anti suicide but it helps be, some of the lyrics are just really relatable.
Side note: I love seeing all of the Tøp comments I love that they help so many people 🙂
    Stay alive frens |-/

  19. I can’t find anything similar to it’s never to late and missing you, I’ve already attempted over 60 times and I’m only 18 and I’m currently struggling please suggest similar to these

  20. Hey guys, I’m Jess, I’m 19, if you need someone to listen or be a friend please email me:) I’ve been through a lot in my life, believe it or not I can identify with physical, sexual, and mental abuse victims, I’ve been bullied, I’ve fallen in love and been engaged, only to have him dump me in the middle of nowhere, I’ve had a close friend kill herself, and more. I was into selfharm of various degrees, hospitalized on OD, and seriously attempted suicide twice. I’ve been undiagnosed anorexic/bulimic for two years, my life is basically messed up. But really I keep going by helping others and talking to other people struggling like me. Like I said, shoot me an email, check my anonymous Insta page (I used to have a fairly large following but it got recently shut down which I’m still pissed aboutXD) where I mentor and befriend lots of girl my age and not so my age:) I love you all, hope to hear from you,
    Jess

  21. Honestly, if you listen to Twenty One Pilots’ songs (especially older ones) many of them are about suicide and things similar to suicide. I quite like their song ‘Friend, Please’ as it’s very supportive and has helped me a lot. Through the chorus and everything, it’s just so uplifting and nice.

  22. Missing you by all time low. I cried when I first heard of that song.

  23. Make It Stop (September’s Children) by Rise Against. Absolutely amazing song for LGBTQA teens struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Adam’s Song by Blink-182. Can’t believe no one’s mentioned it yet

  24. Follow You Down (Anti Suicide Song) – Chevy Levett Ft Kudzai
This song unfortunately does have some offensive language but I know it helped me and reached me when I really needed it. Hope it will help others too.

  25. The sun is Rising by Britt Nicole. “When life has cut too deep and left you hurting, when the future you had hoped for is now burning, and the dreams you held so tight lost their meaning, and you don’t know if you’ll ever find the healing. Your gonna make it. Your gonna make it. The night can only last for so long. Whatever your facing, if your heart is broken, there’s a promise for the ones who just hold on. Lift up your eyes and see the sun is rising.”
I find this so inspirational whenever I’m depressed.

  26. Don’t Close Your Eyes by KIX
It always brings tears to my eyes, sad to say I’ve lost 3 fam/frnds to suicide!!

  27. Battle Scars by Paradise Fears is one of the best anti-suicide song I have ever heard coming from a person who was tempted to commit it….

  28. don’t close your eyes by kix a very powerful anti suciside song also Metallica fade to black even though the lyrics suggest other wise it’s a song that shows we all have black days and are not alone

  29. My favorite anti-suicide song is Friend Please by Twenty One Pilots. The chorus goes like “Friend, please remove your hands from over your eyes for me. I know you want to leave, but friend, please don’t take your life away from me.” The whole song is about anti-suicide, but that is the part where it tells it most. The rest of the lyrics are like this.

“I feel for you but when did you believe you were alone? You say that spiders crawled inside and made themselves a home where light once was. Petrified of who you are and who you have become, you will hide from everyone, denying you need someone to exterminate your bones. Friend, please remove your hands from over your eyes for me. I know you want to leave, but friend, please don’t take your life away from me. Living like a ghost you walk by everyone you know. You say that you’re fine but you have lost your sway and glow, so I stopped by to let you know. Friend, please remove your hands from over your eyes for me. I know you want to leave, but friend, please don’t take your life away from me. Would you let me know your plans tonight? ‘Cause I just won’t let go ’til we both see the light. And I have nothing else left to say, but I will listen to you all day, yes I will. Friend, please remove your hands from over your eyes for me. I know you want to leave, but friend, please don’t take your life away from me.”

I hope you like it. l-/

    • YESSSSS there are a few songs by them that really have helped and they advocate for suicide awareness.

  30. The song “The sun is rising” by Britt Nicole is think is a good song while it may not be against suicide specifically I think it really helps and fits. ((Examples from the song)) ” in the moments you’re so weak you feel like stopping let the hope you have light the road you’re walking”
” you’re gonna make it X2 the night can only last for so long, whatever your facing if your heart is breaking there is a promise for the ones who just hold on lift up your eyes and see The Sun is rising”

  31. Hi thx these really helped me and I know a song called lost boy by Ruth B and its one of my favorite songs to go to for help

  32. You guys should really listen to Being As An Ocean. Songs like This Loneliness Won’t Be the Death of Me, Dear G-D and The Hardest Part Is Forgetting Those You Swore You’d Never Forget are what keep me going.

  33. missing you by all time low

    cuz….

    I heard that you’ve been
Self-medicating in the quiet of your room,
    Your sweet, suburban tomb.
And if you need a friend,
I’ll help you stitch up your wounds.

    I heard that you’ve been
Having some trouble finding your place in the world.
I know how much that hurts,
But if you need a friend
Then please just say the word…

    You’ve come this far,
    You’re all cleaned up,
    You’ve made a mess again,
    There’s no more trying,
    Time to sort yourself out…

    Hold on tight,
This ride is a wild one,
    Make no mistake,
The day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done,
Now don’t lose your fight, kid,
It only takes a little push to pull on through,
    With so much left to do;
You’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you.

    I heard that you’ve been
Having some trouble finding your place in the world.
I know how much that hurts,
And if you need a friend
Then please just say the word…

    You’ve come this far,
    You’re all cleaned up,
    You’ve made a mess again,
    There’s no more trying,
    Time to sort yourself out…

    Hold on tight,
This ride is a wild one,
    Make no mistake,
The day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done,
Now don’t lose your fight, kid,
It only takes a little push to pull on through,
    With so much left to do;
You’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you.

Grit your teeth, pull your hair,
Paint the walls black and scream, “Fuck the world
‘Cause it’s my life, I’m gonna take it back,”
And never for a second blame yourself.

    Hold on tight,
This ride is a wild one,
    Make no mistake,
The day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done,
    (no, you can’t cover up)
    (one, two, three, four!)

    Hold on tight,
This ride is a wild one (this ride is a wild one),
    Make no mistake,
The day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done,
Now don’t lose your fight, kid (don’t lose your fight, kid),
It only takes a little push to pull on through (push to pull on through),
    With so much left to do;
You’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you

  34. How about Billy Joel’s song –“You’re only human” or is it “Second Wind”? This song helped me when I was going through a bad depressive episode–esp lines like “you’re only human, you’re SUPPOSED to make mistakes” and “don’t forget your second wind…sooner or later you’ll feel your momentum kick in…”

  35. “The Pass” by Rush helped me through some difficult times. For anyone who’s a Rush fan and has gone through any serious depressive episode this is an amazingly powerful song.

All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
Turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razor’s edge
    Don’t turn your back
And slam the door on me

    • Wow, that song, Truce (by Twenty-One Pilots), is staggering in its beauty and message.

Thank you for posting it here.

    • Not that I don’t appreciate the sentiment, but I really don’t like this song. I imagine it works differently for a band that’s entirely Christian, but absent that, it reads like yet another demand for the handwaving and psuedo-romanticization of nihilism. Not the best plan considering the target audience that’s likely heard that literally almost to death.

The best ones on this list present an idea or sentiment the subject wasn’t aware of while they are malignantly fixated, not telling them “just don’t do it, ’cause” because the same moral tautology is working just as well in their head the opposite way.

  36. “that suicide thinking we all have”
    haii am nour ..
and i know how it feels to be thinkin’ of suicide cus i did alot before .. yes thats right i’ve tryed so many times and failed !
but i realized that the things that makes us think about suicide is also the things that makes us weak but also strong most of the time.

and i really wanted to die so many times~ but i just realized that am too young to hate my fuckin’ god damn life !
and i thought so many times that my life is a hell so whats wrong with suicide.

and i also kept thinking why am i still here !
and i actualy sometimes didnt know how i really felt !!!!
and to be honest .. sometimes it scares me what can i do myself.

  37. “Sacrifice” by Aurelio Voltaire off his album “Raised by Bats”

    and I quote:

    Only heaven knows why
you sacrificed all that you would be.
    You threw away our dreams.

    So much life to live…
    So much love to give…
    So much life to live…
    So much love to give…

    • Fucking yes! Through out all of my suicidal thoughts and tendencies, coming down has always been the song I’d listen to in order to ease away from all the pain. 5fdp is my favorite band. It’s one of the few bands that have lyrics I can relate to.

    • Nikky, thank you for your comment and for the link to your post. It is very touching. “Why?” is the tormenting question that people face, again and again and again, after the loss of a loved one to suicide. With no other type of death is that question so forceful, loud, and unabating. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. Your love for her shines through your words.

    • That’s a great one, Trisha. Thanks for sharing. For those who want to read the lyrics to “Rise Above This,” click here.

  38. I know quite a few songs dealing with suicide and bullying, actually.

    1) Originally called “Jisatsubushi”, you are most likely to find this song mistranslated under the name “Suicide Song”. In fact, the title is a pun on ‘Jisatsu’ meaning suicide and ‘tsubushi’ meaning busting. “Suicide Busting”, an appropriate title considering the theme of life being “fickle” and “always finding a reason to keep living”.

    2) This has not been mistranslated, as the original was “Abusuturakuto Nansensu”, the kanji spelling of the English words “Abstract Nonsense”. While many lines in the song are random and seem to not belong, in the end the song is about “not having the courage to die”, despite being abused and bullied by your peers.

    3) “Epilogue”. Not much needs to be said about this one, it’s ultimately about starting a new life.

    4) “The Hideous Me Beyond the Mirror”, one of several Nashimoto-P songs I’ll put on this list. This one is about never being content with oneself, and later just not caring at all. “Do you want to live? Do you want to die? Beyond the mirror, I tilt my head. Are you happy? It doesn’t matter if you’re happy…. Until that day I disappear, I continue to breathe.”

    5) “Rolling Girl” is one of Hatsune Miku’s most popular songs. The lyrics are vague, but it’s seemingly about a “roling girl” who wants to “stop her breathing”, but is saved by someone close to her.

    6) Another Nashimoto-P favorite is “Shinitai Judai, Koroshitai Nijudai”, which translates to something similar to “Teens want to die, Twenties want to kill”. Despite this title, it seems to be a love song (“you’re vexing enough to make me wanna kill”).

    7) “Shinitagari”, or “You Wanna Die?” may seem like it’s telling suicidal people to die because no one will care, but it’s actually about someone who’s friends with someone who fakes depression solely for attention and is fed up with their crap, saying they could die because no one would miss an attention hog. The end seems to have a change of heart, the last line “Quit your complaining and live with all your might!”

    8) “There’s Supposed to be a Cheat Code for Happiness”. A song comparing video games to the stressful life of teenagers. Good luck!
